DOLCETTO VINE

It is an ancient and popular grape variety originating from Piedmont, whose first documented information on its cultivation dates back to the eighteenth century, although there is considerable evidence from cultural and rural traditions to suggest that it came into being long before that. Its preferred area, and the one where it is most widespread, is the Monferrato and the entire lower Piedmont, from where it migrated, particularly to Liguria, with clones and varieties there that compete with it, even for its birthright. One of the most frequent misunderstandings concerns the name of this vine: Dolcetto is not at all a characteristic of wine that has a dry and clean taste on the palate. The characteristic “sweetness” is that of the grape which, when picked and tasted on the plant, has low acidity and is so is “sweet” to the palate. Its extensive cultivation throughout the Piedmont countryside was wiped out by phylloxera. The devastated vineyards were completely removed and at the time of the new replanting, the peasants preferred Barbera to this vine as it was more resistant to pests and produced more grapes. Of the seven geographical areas of Piedmont where the best land is reserved for this variety, the lion’s share is held by the Dogliani area, where the wine boasts a DOC classification. The Alessandria area has one of the best yields of this grape.

DOLCETTO WINE

Wines made from Dolcetto are at their finest as a single varietal. The qualities are very distinct depending on the geographical area of cultivation, so we’re confident in our view that the terroir for this grape plays a fundamental role in terms of what it adds to the wine. The Dolcetto WINE has a rather dark, characteristic ruby-red or purplish-red colour; on the nose it has a complex aroma of red berry fruits, especially plum and fruit-of-the-forest; it also has spicy and almond notes; and on the palate, it is dry, tannic, and has little acidity.
